In Spirit '10

~Archita S., VI Semester

A time to free one’s mind, a time to interact, a time to bring some zest into the semester, ‘In spirit’, the annual architectural fest was held on 22nd, 23rd and 24th of April, 2010.
An inter-semester annual event, the 3 day fest gives the students a chance to experience all the ‘fun while learning’ elements of architectural fests with design contests, quizzes and stage events, informal and casual competitions, and seminars.

The preparations for the fest changed the face of the department- sculptures with scrap materials, vibrant posters, rearranged classrooms- all brightened the atmosphere in anticipation of the fest.

The fest was inaugurated by a seminar by the eminent architect, Ar. Sanjay Mohe who spoke about Nature in Architecture, with various observations traditional architecture and its application on the future, and an overview on how to design with nature and the elements, and also a brief insight into his projects and design concepts. The seminar was keenly appreciated by all the students.

This was followed by HEXA, the cultural events, which were a grand success. The events kept the audience and judges entertained and on their feet for a full 2 hours- the sheer variety, the exuberant color and the zest exhibited by all was indeed an excellent kick-start for the events to come.

The second day kicked off with ‘Treasure hunt’ which saw an enthusiastic and a very energetic participation from the students. ‘On the move’, a formal design event, involved an interesting design problem, a caravan design for an architect. A large variety of concepts and ideas emerged, making the judges give 4 prizes for the events. An informal event called ‘Out of sight’ involving sketching while being blindfolded following a description of the object by the other team member also saw a very animated response. A casual event that attracted a large crowd and a lot of cheering was ‘By-pass’, a game for the fastest passing of marbles through pipes.

Saturday began with the Quiz, which saw participation from all semesters with mixed teams, the preliminary round was the solving of an architectural crossword, and the following rounds kept the both finalists and the audience exercising their grey cells. Dumb Charades also invited large number of participants and an eager audience who had great difficulty in refraining from shouting out an enthusiastic answer aloud in the three rounds-   films, architecture and personalities.
‘Flying high’ was an informal design event, keeping the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 in mind, students had to build ‘kite’ for the event using few sheets of paper provided. The last formal event was ‘Phobia’, a interesting design competition with an interesting site and contradicting client requirements that had to be taken care of. The fest concluded with 2 more fun events – ‘tug of war’ and ‘two idiots’, a lot of laughter and memories, and leaving the students looking forward to the next ‘InSpirit’.
